As the climate crisis alters ocean temperatures, marine habitats, and the distribution of fish stocks, marine experts have called for satellite-based decision-support systems and frameworks for sustainable fisheries management.

Speaking at the 47th Asian Conference on Remote Sensing (ACRS 2026), they explored how satellite observations and geospatial technologies could support climate-resilient marine fisheries and safeguard the livelihoods of fishing communities.

Scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), the Ministry of Earth Sciences, and the Department of Fisheries attended the panel discussion, organised by the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI).

Climate change threatens fish stocks and livelihoods

Experts said climate-related changes, including ocean warming, marine heatwaves, and shifts in the distribution of marine species, can affect fish availability, fishing operations, and the livelihoods of communities dependent on marine resources.

These challenges underscore the need for science-based monitoring systems and adaptive fisheries management, said Shubhadeep Ghosh, Assistant Director General of ICAR.

Remote sensing to strengthen fisheries advisories

The panel explored the potential of remote sensing to address these challenges by integrating satellite-derived information on sea surface temperature, ocean colour, and other oceanographic conditions with fisheries data, field observations, and scientific assessments.

The meeting proposed strengthening early warning and fisheries advisories using satellite technologies. Timely information on ocean conditions, potential fishing zones and weather-related risks could help fishers make better-informed decisions.

The panellists included Devika Pillai, Assistant Director General, ICAR; K. Mohammed Koya, Union Fisheries Development Commissioner; Aneesh Lotliker, Scientist, INCOIS; Divu D and Vinay Kumar Vase, ICAR-CMFRI.
